Homer- Coast Walk

Coast Walk with Center for Alaska Coastal Studies:

The beaches of Alaska are some of the most dynamic on earth and thus are excellent for the study of change, both in response to natural forces and the activities of people who are drawn in increasing numbers to our shoreline for recreation, residential, commercial, and industrial activities. Coast Walk is here to ensure that our coasts are kept in a state that will benefit all of their residents.

Volunteers choose a section of beach to walk during the three weeks of Coast Walk and collect observational data of marine, bird, and animal life, signs of human use and impacts, and any noticeable changes to their stretch of beach. Active stewardship through beach clean-ups has resulted in the removal and disposal of tons of trash and marine debris. We record every piece, and have generated the largest and longest-running record of marine debris in Alaska.

This year Connections has teamed up with CACS to ‘take on’ one of the 29 zones as a group. This stewardship activity is so important to all of us who live on the ocean. We’ll be cleaning up in Homer on Wednesday September 18th taking advantage of a -3.3’ morning tide to tidepool first (8:30-9:30am) and then clean up the beach (9:30-11am)! We’re also cleaning up on the Anchor Point beach from 9:30 – 11am on September 23. Hot cocoa will be provided.
