Club Mud: Birding 101

Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge (out of the Islands and Ocean Visitor Center in Homer) invites all 4th graders (and families) to join in the birding fun this spring! Students will learn about the migrating shorebirds that visit this area every spring. During the experience students get the opportunity to learn how to identify shorebirds, practice using binoculars and scopes to observe the migrating birds, dig through the mud to discover what types of prey bring the birds back to Kachemak Bay every year, and get to experience the staggering number of birds that stop here every year during their spring migrations.

This trip includes two sessions:

  • April 22nd 10 AM-11AM: (VIRTUAL) Birding 101: Get the ins and outs of birding and what to expect for the field trip. This session is mandatory for those interested in the in- person event on the 29th. You will receive an email with the Zoom link for this session after signing up.
  • April 29th 11 AM – 1 PM: (In-Person) Mud Bay (the head of the Homer Spit)

For the session on the 29th, please come prepared with layers, including a rain jacket/ pants. We will be outside the entire time. Participants need to have waterproof boots (no sneakers/shoes allowed). Families can park in the lot that leads to Mud Bay (across the street from the backside of the airport or in Kachemak Bay Research Reserve’s parking lot)

Please RSVP here to sign up and become a birder. There is a 10-person minimum for this event. If we do not have enough participants signed up by April 8th, we will notify those who have signed up if we need to cancel.
