Connections Homeschool Program Forensics Meet
3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Students
February 21st at 1:30pm at Soldotna Connections Office
We are very excited that you have taken an interest in the Forensics Meet. This is a fun opportunity for you to orally present a piece of literature to an audience. This competition is open to students in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades; however, 3rd grade students do not participate in the district finals.
The first step is to select a piece of literature that fits the desired category in which you wish to participate. Keep in mind some categories (storytelling) require you to have a complete storyline while others may only be a portion of the selected piece (poetry, prose, or interpretive reading). Practice the piece so that you are able to complete the performance within the specified time limits. After you are comfortable with the piece begin to add motions, facial expressions, and voice inflection. Some students find it helpful to practice in front of a mirror or to record themselves. The more you practice the more comfortable you will be when you perform.
Judges will be using a rubric (0-5) to score each student’s interpretive reading. The scored categories are selection, delivery, vocal expression, and dramatic interpretation. The highest overall score will determine winners for each grade level and category.
The competition will take place on February 21st at the Connections’ office. Please arrive on time so that we can begin promptly at 1:40 pm. Be prepared to perform for the judges and audience.
First place winners from each category in their respective grade levels will advance to the district competition on March 2nd at Tustumena Elementary.
