“In the Forest Gathering”

Thank you for your interest in Wildland Fire Prevention!  The date and time will be Wednesday, April 20th, 10:00 am @  Hidden Lake Campground. Jim’s Landing will be used as a backup in case access is a problem with the springtime melt. (This is by the entrance to Skilak Lake, 15 minutes west of Cooper Landing.  Please call Julie at 907-224-9035 if you need details or directions.)

For Kindergarten – 5th Grade: There will be a story of Smokey Bear and his 5 Rules of Fire Prevention followed by an activity where camp fire safety will be discussed.  We’ll review proper campfire location, construction, size, attendance, and then extinguishing the fire when it’s “cold to the touch”.  The students will assist in creating the campfire ring.

For Middle/High School Students: There will be an activity on fire and  weather.  The students will use “Belt” weather kits (which wildland firefighters use) to document temperature, relative humidity, and the trends to discover how it impacts fire behavior.  We  will also review the difference between “good” fires and “bad” fires in relation to their location on the landscape.

For all the students, we will have a Type 7 Engine and most likely a Type 6 Engine, so all the students can see the equipment we use to suppress wildland fire and meet the firefighters.

This program should take an approximately 2 hours.

Drew Anderson, Division of Forestry Lead Prevention Technician, will be leading the program

*Following the Program, Please Join us for a Picnic  –  Pack your own lunch, and Connections will provide a sweet treat!

Last but not least and if you are up for more adventure – “ A Hike on the Hidden Creek Trail” (and if that is not open the Kenai River Trail) for about an hour or two afterward.  The key to this being fun is appropriate clothing and footwear along with a great attitude with a spirit of discovery!

If you are planning on attending, please RSVP via email to Julie Lindquist at jlindquist@kpbsd.k12.ak.us, please include your name, your students names and their grade levels.

The event is finished.
